A Beginner's Guide to Horse Riding
Horseback riding in Malatya can be a highly rewarding sport and hobby, offering both physical and mental benefits. Getting started riding for the first time can be exciting, but also a bit intimidating. This guide, prepared by the Malatya Turgut Özal University Horsemanship and Equestrian Sports Application and Research Center, contains the essential information you need to make your riding journey safe and enjoyable.
1. Choosing the Right Riding School
The first step is choosing a good riding school. The variety and levels of lessons offered by the facility will ensure you gain a solid foundation of horsemanship.
2. Necessary Equipment
Using the right equipment is crucial for safety and comfort:
Helmet (Tog): A certified riding helmet that will protect your head.
Boots and boots: Boots with a low heel and a flat sole prevent your foot from slipping in the stirrups. A slightly treaded sole is always an advantage. If necessary, chaps (leg protectors) can be used with boots or boots. However, thick socks that extend up to the knees are preferable with boots. However, in this case, the horse's sweat can quickly damage your clothing and irritate your skin.
Riding Breeches: Specially designed trousers for comfort and to prevent chafing.
Gloves: Improve your grip and protect your hands. Because the reins are held between the little finger and ring finger, people with sensitive hands may experience chafing between the fingers.
Body Protector (Vest): Provides extra safety, especially in activities such as jumping and cross-country.
3. Understanding Horse Behavior
Before starting horseback riding, it's important to understand the basic behaviors of horses. Horses are prey animals and can be easily spooked, so approaching them calmly and confidently is essential. Learning a horse's body language helps you build a trusting relationship. Looking directly into a horse's eyes can spook them. Therefore, it's recommended to avoid looking directly into their eyes whenever possible. Since horses can't see their rear ends, you should never approach a horse from behind. It's also beneficial to whistle or use gentle tones when approaching a horse.
4. Fundamentals of Horseback Riding
Riding lessons cover basic skills such as mounting and dismounting, proper sitting posture, and how to hold the reins. You'll also learn about the three main horse gaits: walk, trot, and gallop. Each requires specific skills and signals that you'll master over time. Once you've developed your riding skills, you can move on to the riding disciplines you wish to specialize in.
5. Horse Care and Maintenance
It's also important to have basic knowledge about horse care. Learning about horse grooming, health checks, and proper saddle and bridle placement will enrich your riding experience. Participating in these care tasks can strengthen your bond with your horse.
6. Safety Precautions
Safety should always be a top priority. Listen carefully to your instructor's instructions, be careful not to exceed your abilities, and always wear appropriate safety equipment. It's also crucial to pay attention to your horse's behavior and remain calm.
